Vent: That $80 tent footprint I bought last year was a complete ripoff.

Took it out to Lake Tahoe last weekend and the thing shredded after one night on gravel. Anyone else given up on brand-specific footprints and just use a tarp instead?

...and there I was thinking I was being smart dropping 60 bucks on the REI one for my tent. First night out at Yosemite, I wake up to find the thing had basically turned into confetti under my tent. Gravel and sharp rocks just ate it alive. Now I just cut up an old blue tarp from Harbor Freight, cost me like 8 bucks, and it's been through three trips with nothing but some dirt stains. Wish I'd learned that lesson before my wallet did.

Totally agree @david_jones38, it's wild how we'll pay triple for the same plastic just because it's shaped for our tent. It's like how everyone buys those overpriced "travel size" bottles when a refillable one costs half the price and works better.

The blue tarp trick is legit, saved me a ton too after my first groundsheet died.
