Stopped paying my bank's NSF fees by switching to one simple account setting
I used to get hit with $48 NSF fees at my bank in Halifax like clockwork. Every payday I'd be short $20 and bam, another fee. Last August I switched to a free online chequing account instead. Big difference: no monthly fee, no minimum balance, and they send me a text before anything bounces. I've saved about $340 in fees over 10 months. The big bank branch kept telling me to just keep a buffer but never mentioned the free option. Anyone else made the switch or found a better setup for avoiding those fees?
Switched to a no fee online account two years ago and it was the best money move I ever made. My old bank wanted $16.95 a month just for the privilege of holding my cash plus they nickel and dimed me on everything. The text alerts alone are worth it, saved me from so many overdrafts.
