Vent: my TFSA room is bigger than I thought and I nearly maxed the wrong account

Sat down last week to dump $6,500 into my TFSA and my buddy asked if I had checked the CRA portal first. Turns out my limit was $21,000 not the $12,000 I had in my head, since I have been contributing since 2016 and never kept track. I had been shoving cash into a regular savings account at 2% for two years thinking I was playing it safe. Pulled up the My CRA Account page and there it was in black and white, took four minutes. Anyone else track their room in a spreadsheet or do you just trust the portal number each January?
