Hit 1,000 subscribers and got canceled by my own fans

I finally passed 1,000 subs on my true crime channel last Tuesday, then a video from 3 years ago resurfaced and they all piled on for a bad joke I made. I spent 2 days defending myself in the comments before I just deleted the whole thing, was that the right move or did I lose a community I could've kept?

...and honestly the real problem isn't the joke, it's that you treated those 1,000 subs like they were your friends. They're not. They're an audience, and audiences are fickle by design. One day you're their favorite thing, next day they need someone to hate and you're the easiest target. Deleting the channel didn't lose you a community, it lost you a platform. The people who actually liked your content would've gotten over it in a week, but the ones who got mad were always gonna find a reason. You gave them the win by vanishing. Now the joke lives on in screenshots and you got nothing to show for it.
