My take on the whole 'Martha Stewart went to jail' thing has flipped since 2004
Back in 2004 I was 22 and working at a diner in Akron, and I remember thinking she got what she deserved for lying about a stock sale. Everyone at that counter was cheering, like a rich lady finally got knocked down a peg. Now at 43 I look at it and it was a 5 month sentence over a trade worth like $45k, while guys who tanked whole companies walked away with golden parachutes. Same thing with the whole Janet Jackson Super Bowl mess that same year, one flash and her career got hit way harder than Justin Timberlake's did. Feels like back then people got canceled for one bad moment, and today it takes a whole pile of receipts and even then half the internet moves on by Friday. Does anyone else think the 2004 era was way harsher than the 2020s cancel stuff everyone complains about?
