the old trick my dad showed me for fixing scratched records

I was about to toss a few old vinyls I picked up at a thrift store that were all scratched up. My dad saw me complaining and said try a soft cloth with a tiny bit of dish soap and water, rub in circles. I thought he was crazy but tried it on a scratched up copy of Fleetwood Mac Rumours and it actually played way clearer. Has anyone else got a dumb little household trick that saved something you were about to throw out?

Oh jeez, I've got one that saved my old turntable from the dumpster. The rubber belt inside got all stretched out and wouldn't spin right. Instead of ordering a pricey replacement, I snipped a rubber band to the exact length and superglued the ends together. Worked like a charm for two years until I finally got around to buying the real part. Sometimes the janky fix holds up longer than you'd expect.

Regular rubber bands actually hold up better than those specific belts in some cases. Had a buddy who used a hair tie on his deck for almost three years before it finally snapped.
