Thought the 'cancel Seinfeld reruns' thing was just internet noise, then I actually watched a few episodes with my niece
Last month my 19 year old niece stayed with me in Sacramento for two weeks and kept asking why I still laughed at a show where the characters joke about this stuff, so I sat down and watched 5 episodes with her to prove her wrong. By episode 3 I was doing the exact same awkward laugh she was, and I couldn't come up with a single good reason why some of those bits needed to be in there. So my real question is, does the age of a show actually change whether it deserved to get pulled, or am I just too close to it because I grew up on it?
I'm 34 and grew up on Seinfeld too, watched it every night in high school, so I get the "it's just a product of its time" thing. But my roommate made me rewatch the Chinese restaurant episode last year and I caught myself cringing at stuff I used to laugh right past. Age of a show does not really change what a joke is doing, it just changes how many people notice. I used to argue the exact same way you did, that people were being too sensitive and it was only a sitcom. Now I figure if the joke only lands because of a stereotype, that is not me being nostalgic, that is me being lazy about what I find funny.
