Warning: a homemade video got 4 million views and now nobody talks about the actual issue
Last spring a clip from a small town in Ohio blew up and got 4 million views in about a week. The guy in it made one dumb joke about a local festival and suddenly his name was everywhere, his job got calls, and a sponsor dropped him. I watched the whole thing go down and the wild part is that nobody ever talked about what he actually did wrong or if it even mattered. It was just pile on, pile on, pile on for 10 days and then the internet moved on to the next thing. He lost a job over a joke that would have gotten a shrug at any bar in that town. So my real question is this, when did we decide that 10 seconds of bad judgment deserves a life sentence? Does anyone here actually think that punishment matched the crime, or are we all just too scared to say it out loud?
The thing about that Ohio clip that bugs me is the timeline people keep repeating. It didn't blow up because some random guy made a joke. Somebody else recorded him without him knowing and posted it, and then a couple big accounts pushed it for their own clicks. That part almost never gets mentioned. So saying he "lost a job over a joke" kind of skips the middle, where strangers decided his 10 seconds was worth more than his whole life. The punishment still seems way off to me, but the pile on didn't just happen. People built it on purpose.
