Warning: Taking that friend's advice to "just wing it" on car maintenance cost me big time
My buddy Mike told me I didn't need a proper torque wrench to change my oil pan gasket on my 2005 Honda Civic. He said hand tightening would be fine lmao. So I did it his way, and about 50 miles later the gasket started leaking oil all over my driveway in Austin. Had to spend $180 at a shop to fix the leak plus buy a new gasket kit. The mechanic literally showed me the stripped bolt holes and laughed. Mike's been giving car advice for years but I think he just gets lucky. Has anyone else had a friend give them mechanical tips that ended up costing more than just doing it right the first time?

Mike's probably been lucky his whole life, not just with cars.

Yeah that part about "lucky his whole life, not just with cars" really got me thinking. I used to be one of those people who believed you make your own luck and all that. But honestly seeing how some people just coast through everything while others bust their ass and still get screwed over changed my mind completely. Some folks just have that golden horseshoe up their ass and it shows in everything they do, not just the obvious stuff.
