Bought a $200 carpet knee kicker off a guy in a parking lot, it lasted 3 rooms
So I was wrapping up a 4 room job in Mesa a couple months back and my old kicker finally gave out on me. A guy I met through a buddy said he had a barely used one for 200 bucks cash, met me in a Walmart parking lot at 9pm like we were doing a drug deal or something. I get it home and the head is already loose, the teeth were basically rounded off, and it wouldn't grab anything. I fought through 3 rooms with it slipping on every stretch before I tossed it in the dumpster. Ended up dropping 380 on a new one the next morning and finished the job in half the time. Lesson is dont buy tools out of a trunk, but I'm curious if anyone has ever had luck with used gear or if I just got played.
Got to push back on this one. Buying used tools is how half the guys I know built their whole setup, and writing it off because of one bad deal is like never eating at a restaurant again because you got a bad burger once. That guy in the parking lot was not a tool seller, he was a guy with a junk kicker and a story, which is a totally different thing. When you buy from someone who actually does the trade, they tend to take care of their gear and you can ask them questions, see the teeth, feel the head for play before any money changes hands. Two hundred bucks for a kicker that retails at 380 is not even a great deal, so the red flags were there before you even got in the truck. The real lesson here is not skip used stuff, it is know what you are looking at and walk away when the price does not match the condition.
