Customer told me to cut corners on a staircase, I walked off the job in Akron
Guy with a $2,500 quote tried to talk me down to $1,800 and said just skip the tack strips on the top two steps because nobody looks there. I packed my tools and left, then he called me three times asking if I was serious. Has anyone else had a homeowner try to cheap out on stairs and then act shocked when you bail?

Honestly the tack strip thing is whatever, but the real red flag is him timing the cost cut on the two steps people actually use the most. If he's that casual about safety on the visible part, imagine what he'd argue about on the stuff you can't see later. You dodged a headache, not just a paycheck.

Did you flat out ask him why he skipped those steps? Sometimes calling it out fixes it before you sign.
