My battle with a self-rolling carpet pad
Every time I turned around, it curled back into a tube. I swear it was laughing at me.

Remember the old plastic tablecloths that came in a box? They had that same evil memory. You'd fight to spread one out for a birthday party and the corners would just snap back up, knocking over cups. I finally started ironing them on low with a towel in between, which felt like a ridiculous amount of effort for a two dollar piece of plastic. Some materials just have a real attitude problem.

Good grief, those things are a menace. I had one that refused to flatten until I left heavy books on it for days. It's all about the roll memory, just like David said. Once it relaxes, it usually stays put.

I get what you mean about it laughing, but I always figured those pads curl up because of the way they're made. The material has memory, so it wants to go back to how it was rolled in the store. I've had one that never laid flat until I weighted it down for a week. It's more stubborn than mean.

Used to think it was just cheap materials or bad design. Your point about the memory in how it's rolled actually makes a lot of sense. My old mat was a nightmare that always tried to trip me, and I never connected it to the store packaging. You've convinced me it's not personal, just physics being stubborn.
