Saw something weird at a job site in Phoenix last week

I was doing a tear-out at an old house near downtown. The carpet was from the 80s. But under the pad, someone had laid down newspaper instead of fresh concrete. The paper was still readable. "Carpet Prices Going Up" was the headline. Never seen that before. Has anyone else found weird stuff under old carpet?

Honestly I'm with you on being skeptical. That paper would be dust if it was really from the 80s and sitting under carpet pad. Maybe it was some old ad or a vintage reprint someone stuck down as a joke. People do weird stuff when they're trying to cover up a bad floor patch or just being lazy.

Wait, are you sure that was newspaper and not some kind of old building paper or tar paper? I've seen old houses where they'd lay down layers of newspaper as a cheap vapor barrier or leveling pad under linoleum, but under a carpet pad that's wild. Usually newspaper from the 80s would be super brittle and fall apart if you touched it. You sure the headline wasn't just some old ad or a fake print?

It's funny how the things people leave behind end up telling the biggest stories about how they really lived.
