The mountain of discarded carpet I saw last week has me thinking.

We need to find better ways to reuse old carpet materials.

My buddy tried to recycle his old carpet last year, total nightmare.

Tried that once myself, felt like wade_wells described a town budget meeting, just a hopeless mess.

Yeah, that's because most carpet is a mix of nylon fibers and latex backing that's glued together. Trying to pull them apart is a mess, and recycling centers often just turn it away. Some places chop it up for use in things like insulation or even as padding for horse stalls. But without easy drop-off spots, people end up dumping it. We need more systems that actually take this stuff, not just more piles behind the hardware store. It's a bit sad, really.

That line about needing more systems is spot on. Most towns don't have the budget or will to handle tricky waste like carpet. So it ends up in landfills because no one's forced to deal with it.
