Took me 6 hours to fix a seam that should have been 20 minutes

I was doing a bedroom in North Phoenix last Thursday. Had this one seam where the carpet just wouldn't lay flat no matter what I did. I kept trimming and re-trimming the edges, thinking it was a knife angle issue. After about 4 hours I realized the padding underneath had a small bump from a staple gun jam. Padded it down and the seam came together in 5 minutes. Anyone else ever chase a problem that turned out to be something simple but buried?

Honestly, that "6 hours for 20 minute job" part hit me right in the gut. I've done that exact same dance so many times where you keep grinding on the same spot and it just gets worse. The worst part is when you finally figure out it was something small and dumb, you feel like an idiot but also super relieved at the same time. Glad you found that padding bump though, those hidden little issues can really mess with your head.

the "kept grinding on the same spot and it just gets worse" part is so real. i've been there with a stupid sticking kitchen drawer where i sanded the runner for like 2 hours before realizing the actual problem was a little warped bit of wood on the back corner. drives you crazy. @morgan.rose the trick that finally saved me is to walk away for 5 minutes and come back with totally fresh eyes before you dig in deeper. or better yet talk it out to someone who doesnt care about the project, they'll ask the dumb obvious question that fixes it every time.

The trick about talking to someone who doesn't care is pure gold... my husband sat there staring at me while I ranted about a warped shelf for 20 minutes until he finally asked "did you check if the wall is straight?" and of course it wasn't. Feel like half my projects end up being me fighting my own dumb mistakes while the real problem is hiding somewhere totally obvious...
