Update: the carpet store on Route 9 keeps selling 8 lb pad to homeowners who ask for the best
I did an estimate in Albany last Tuesday and the homeowner proudly showed me the pad she picked out, an 8 lb rebond the salesman called top of the line. Here is the problem, 8 lb is dense but thin, and it does almost nothing for a berber or any loop pile going over a slab with a few dips in it. I know because I pulled up her old floor and the backing was worn through in the traffic lanes after 6 years, right where the pad had bottomed out. A 6 lb pad at 7/16 inch would have held up better for half the price. Does anyone else run into this, or is it just the shops around here?
Watched a guy at a big box store talk a young couple into the thickest pad they had for a stair runner last year. Same deal, dense and fancy sounding, and the carpet was buckling at the nose of every tread within months. Pad has one job in that spot, grip the carpet and stay put, and the thick stuff squishes out from under your foot with every step. I told them to go thinner and stiffer and they looked at me like I was crazy. Salesman gets his spiff either way so he doesn't care what happens after the truck pulls off. Your Albany lady got sold a label, not a pad.
