Chose a $40 hostel over a $220 hotel in Lisbon last week and I'm still itchy

I told myself I'd save money and picked the cheap bunk bed, but by night two I was scratching bug bites and googling how much a hotel would cost. My friend booked the hotel for $220 and slept like a baby while I paid $40 to suffer, so now I always check recent photos before booking. Has anyone else gotten burned by a place that looked fine in the listing?
