Gas tax in Ohio went up and I flipped my stance after one bridge trip
Last month I drove from Cleveland to Dayton on I-75 and hit three construction zones with cracked pavement everywhere. I used to hate the gas tax increase, thought it was just the state grabbing cash. Then I saw a sign saying 40% of Ohio bridges are over 50 years old and need replacement. My dad always said road work is a scam, and I agreed with him for years. But after watching semis bounce over those bumps and nearly losing my coffee in my own cup holder, I started wondering if the tax money actually does something. Now I'm arguing with my brother about whether a 5 cent increase per gallon is worth it. He says the state mismanages funds, I say show me a road that got fixed without it. Anyone else flip sides on a tax or fee they used to hate, and what changed your mind?

My buddy Marcus bitched about the gas tax for years, hardcore, until his rear strut snapped on a pothole near Findlay last fall. He got the bill for $740 and that same week the county repaved that exact stretch of road. Now he's the one posting bridge inspection reports in our group chat like it's a hobby. I still give him crap about it, but honestly, he did a full 180 after his wallet took the hit.

Figure his wallet finally woke him up, but I've seen plenty of folks stay mad about taxes even after the roads get fixed... guess it just depends on who's paying.
