Honestly, I thought 'buying local' was just a feel-good slogan until I saw the difference in my town's main street after 5 years.

Actually, that main street change could be from a dozen other things. New zoning laws, a big apartment building opening up, or just plain luck with a few good business owners. Buying local is nice in theory, but it's way more expensive and the selection is usually worse. Sometimes a big box store moving in nearby is what really saves people time and money.

My local hardware store price matches Home Depot, @knight.dylan.

Exactly, and that price matching proves the point. If the local store has to copy the big box price to survive, then the "buy local" premium is a myth. My time matters too, and driving to five different small stores to find what I need is a waste of a Saturday. That main street revival? Probably just a couple popular coffee shops and a bank. The real change is getting my project done in one trip without blowing my budget.
