I argued with my brother for years that you had to hand-water every plant individually
He showed me his drip irrigation setup from a $40 kit, and his garden looked better than mine after a weekend trip. Anyone else have a basic gardening belief that turned out to be totally wrong?

I mean, I was the same way with fertilizer, like it had to be the fancy liquid stuff you mix every week. Then I saw my neighbor just toss some cheap slow-release granules around his plants once in spring. His tomatoes were huge and mine were always struggling. It made me realize I was overcomplicating everything, maybe trying too hard to be the perfect gardener when simple works better.

Totally get that, it's such a trap. I did the exact same thing with watering systems, bought all these timers and special drip lines. My basil kept dying while my mom's plants, which she just waters with a hose when she remembers, are thriving. Sometimes putting in less effort actually gives you better results, it's wild.

Wasted years on fancy soil mixes before trying plain dirt.

My sister bought this crazy expensive automatic watering system that connects to an app. She had to replace the batteries twice and the thing still flooded her petunias. Meanwhile her kid just uses a plastic watering can from the dollar store on the same plants and they look amazing. It's like we're all trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
