I finally changed my mind about renting vs buying tools

I was always a buy-it-for-life person, figured owning a power drill for 8 years beat renting one for $25 a weekend. Then I had a chat with a contractor at my sister's place in Austin who said renting is smarter for anything you use less than 5 times a year. He pointed out that my cheap drill needed two repairs that cost me $90 total, and I could've rented a pro-grade one for way less hassle. Now I rent the big stuff like tile saws and just own the basics, and it's honestly freed up my closet and my wallet. Has anyone else switched teams on this after a specific conversation?
