I used to think a smart thermostat was a waste of money for my old house

I got a Nest last winter because my gas bill was crazy high, and I figured it was just my drafty windows in Chicago. After three months of it 'learning' my schedule, I saw my bill go up by $15 a month because it kept kicking on the heat when I wasn't home (I guess it thought I should be). I switched it back to a basic programmable schedule myself and saved the cash. Has anyone else had a smart device make things worse instead of better?

Yeah, that's why I turned the learning stuff off too (and mason_fisher might be onto something). They just guess wrong sometimes and you end up wasting money. Manual schedule is the way to go.

Ugh, it learned you were a lizard person.

Hah, well in my case it probably learned I'm a night owl who forgets to turn the AC down. Woke up to a 60 degree house last week because it decided I like it frigid at 3 AM. My own fault for letting it guess. Your mileage may vary, but manual control just feels safer.

I set mine to 68 at night and turned off the learning feature.
