My stubbornness about learning to cook almost burned the house down

I used to think cooking was a waste of time and ordered takeout every night. After setting off the smoke alarm trying to fry an egg, I saw that basic kitchen skills are really important for safety and saving money. What everyday skill did you ignore until a disaster made you learn it?

Oh man, my own stubborn refusal to follow recipes once led to charcoal toast and a very angry smoke alarm!

Ever try toasting bread in a dry pan?

Ouch, burned soup taught me low heat works.

Seriously, an egg caused a near-fire? What was the final straw that made you actually learn, like did you have to explain scorch marks to a landlord? @quinnr58's soup story hits home, but how do you mess up boiling water that badly? I bet your kitchen still smells like regret.
