Overheard a guy at the hardware store in Austin say he stopped buying name brand paint and now I'm questioning my whole approach to picking colors
He said the store brand mixes from the same base but costs $12 less per gallon, so I grabbed a can for my living room and it covered just as good, has anyone else saved money by switching stores for the same thing?

The "same base" thing is real, I've done this with a few stores now. Just check the ingredients list on the label, it's usually identical for the basic paint lines. Have you tried their primer too, or just the color?

Hang on, are we sure about that? I actually peeled labels off a few cans at different big box stores and the first five ingredients were totally different. Like one had titanium dioxide as the third thing, another had it way down the list, and one brand straight up listed water before anything else. Maybe you're looking at the higher end lines, but the budget stuff? Not even close to the same base. And primers? I tried one from a hardware chain and it had this weird glue smell, another from a paint shop was practically odorless, so I'm not buying they share a formula. Seems like a gamble to me.

Saw the same thing with Valspar vs Behr at Lowe's and Home Depot. The ingredient lists matched line for line on the flat white.
