Pro tip: I swapped paper towels for rags and saved $80 in 3 months

I used to buy those big packs of paper towels every trip to the grocery store, until my buddy Matt said I was burning cash for no reason. After resisting for a month, I finally bought a 12 pack of bar mop rags from the restaurant supply store for $15 and honestly I haven't touched a paper towel since. Has anyone else made the switch and noticed their trash can not filling up so fast?

Wait, is saving $80 over three months really that big of a deal? I mean yeah paper towels cost money but I go through maybe one big roll every two weeks and they cost like $2 at the dollar store. So you saved maybe $20 a month tops, which is fine but not exactly life changing money. Plus those rags get pretty nasty if you don't wash them right away, I tried using old t-shirts once and ended up with a sour smelling pile in the corner of my kitchen. It's cool if you like the system but I don't think paper towels are the budget killer everyone makes them out to be.

Hey, fair point. I cut paper towels six months ago and for me it was more about not having to buy them than the money, but I toss my rags in a bucket with some vinegar and water until wash day and that kills the sour smell dead.
