Rant: my dad told me to spend more on a rain jacket and I laughed at him until I got hypothermia on Mt. Whitney last fall
I bought a $40 poncho from a gas station because I thought rain jackets were a scam, then spent 5 hours shivering at 12,000 feet before a hiker let me borrow his shell - has anyone else been humbled by cheap gear?

Bought a $30 Walmart shell for a trip to Rainier and almost froze to death on Muir Snowfield.

Used to think a cheap shell was fine as long as you layered right. That trip would've changed my mind real quick.
