That one sentence from a retired electrician made me rethink my whole tool budget

I was at a supply house waiting for parts and this old-timer said "your best tool is the one you already own, not the one you're about to buy." He told me he spent 30 years building a reputation with a basic multimeter and a pair of linesmans. Made me cancel my order for a $400 diagnostic gadget and instead put that money into a weekend class on refrigeration cycle theory. Has anyone else had a realization like that from a stranger's offhand comment?
