Took a customer's complaint about my paint advice seriously and it changed how I work

I work at a hardware store and this older guy came back furious because the paint I recommended peeled off his garage door after 3 months. He said I should have asked if it was a metal door getting direct sun, which I totally didn't. I felt awful, then I looked up the specifics and realized I'd been giving the same generic advice to everyone for years. Now I ask about surface material, sun exposure, and temperature range before I suggest anything. Did any of you have to learn a similar lesson the hard way about something you thought you knew?

Heard a similar story from my buddy who painted fences - he used to recommend the same sealer for everything until a customer's deck turned green with mold after a wet spring. Now he swears by asking about moisture levels first lol.

Oh man, "green with mold" reminds me of this time I helped a neighbor seal his deck and we used the same stuff I always used on my own... ended up peeling like crazy six months later because his wood was still damp from a wet season. I felt so bad watching him scrape it all off the next summer. Now I pretty much do the same as your buddy, I stick a moisture meter in the wood before I even touch a brush. It's wild how much difference just checking that one thing makes.

Read somewhere that some stains need the wood to be under 15% moisture or they just won't bond right. Sounds like your meter is saving you a whole lot of hassle.
