Update: My niece's glitter disaster flipped my view on craft time

I used to ban all messy projects at family gatherings. After she covered the dog in glitter and we couldn't stop laughing, I caved. Now I just put down a tarp and let the chaos happen.

Plastic tablecloths from the dollar store saved our furniture. We just roll them up and toss the whole mess when they're done.

Did you see that tip online about taping down the edges of those plastic tablecloths? I read somewhere that it helps with really runny stuff... like the slime disaster @jakejones mentioned. People were saying even a little bit of painter's tape keeps everything contained. Might be worth trying if you've got kids who go all out with their crafts. Otherwise you're just chasing a flimsy sheet around the table while glue drips everywhere...

Honestly, I just skip the plastic sheets now. They always rip or slide around anyway. I use old newspapers from my neighbor and let the kids go wild, then toss the whole bundle. Way less hassle.

Ever see a kid turn a craft into a full disaster? My friend tried making slime with her son and it fused to the kitchen table. They had to chisel it off and now it's just a hilarious story they tell.
