Used to swear by open floor plans until I lived in one for 6 months

I thought open concept was the dream until I moved into this apartment near downtown and realized I can hear my roommate chewing chips from the bedroom. Now I'm back to wanting actual walls and doors between me and other people's noise. Anyone else get fooled by the hype on this one?

Ended up putting a big bookshelf between the living area and the kitchen in my old apartment. It broke up the space enough so you didn't feel like you were sitting inside the stove. Also helped a ton with the noise and gave me some fake walls without ripping anything out.

Open layouts can be great for families who actually hang out together though. My cousin has one and her kids do their homework at the island while she cooks, they can all still talk and watch the game. Way better than everyone hiding in separate rooms.

Open concept is just a fancy way of saying no privacy and I learned that the hard way too.

You ever sit in someone's living room and feel like you're in their kitchen? Buddy of mine bought a house with that open layout. Thought it'd be great for parties. Now his wife can't watch TV without hearing him chop onions. Kids do homework at the dining table and everyone stepping over backpacks. Smells from dinner drift into the couch cushions. He told me last week he's thinking of building a wall. Just a wall.
