Used to think therapy was just for crisis cases until my buddy called me out

Three months ago my friend Jake sat me down after I vented for like 20 minutes about work stress and family drama. He asked me straight up when the last time was I talked to someone about my stuff. I said I didn't need therapy because my problems weren't that bad compared to other people. He pointed out that I was using that logic to avoid dealing with medium sized problems until they blow up. That got me thinking and I signed up for a virtual session with a therapist two weeks later. Turns out talking to a neutral person about everyday anxiety and patterns is super helpful even if nothing catastrophic is happening. Has anyone else avoided therapy because they thought it was only for major trauma?

Changed my mind about it too after trying it.

Yeah no one ever mentions that it can help you catch your own bad patterns before they ruin a friendship!

emerym36 said "Changed my mind about it too after trying it." Yeah I had that EXACT same thing happen. I used to think therapy was for people with like PTSD or losing a loved one, not a guy who gets stressed about work deadlines and family dinners. Turns out I was just using that as an excuse because I was SCARED of what a therapist might say. Honestly the first few sessions I just whined about dumb stuff like my coworker leaving dishes in the sink and my therapist was like cool let's talk about why that bothers you so much. Now I'm over here paying someone to help me handle small things instead of letting them grow into huge problems. It feels a little ridiculous but it definitely works.
