Question about my $1.29 bag of rice going bad before I could finish it
Bought a 5 pound bag of rice at the Grocery Outlet in Boise for $1.29 and felt like a genius for about two months. Last Tuesday I opened the bin and it smelled musty and had little bugs crawling in it. Turns out I left it in a paper bag on the shelf next to the stove where heat and steam got to it. Now I'm putting rice in old pickle jars. What do you all use to keep dry goods fresh without buying fancy containers?
Same thing happened to me with a big bag of flour from WinCo, left it in the bag on the counter and a month later it was crawling with weevils. Lesson learned the hard way. Those glass jars from pasta sauce and pickles work great and cost nothing, just make sure they are totally dry before you fill them. My grandma used old coffee cans with the plastic lids and swore by them for years. Storing stuff away from the stove and any heat is half the battle honestly. Got a shelf in the pantry that stays cool and dark now and nothing has gone bad since.
