Blew $80 on a fancy mandoline that shaved off half my fingertip in 10 seconds
Bought this expensive Japanese mandoline from a supply shop in Chicago last month. Thought I was being smart getting the one with all the attachments. First time using it, went too fast trying to impress the prep cook, and slice. Right into my index finger. Blood everywhere. $80 down the drain plus a trip to urgent care for stitches. Thing is sitting in my locker now like a cursed object. Anyone else have a kitchen tool that backfired this bad?

Man I feel that. A friend of mine got one of those Benriner mandolines and thought he was hot stuff until he shaved a chunk off his palm trying to do cabbage for coleslaw. The thing with those Japanese blades is they're too sharp honestly. Like they don't catch on skin they just go right through it. He ended up tossing his in the back of a drawer too. At least you got a story out of it though. Every time I see a mandoline now I just grab the cheap plastic one from Target. It won't cut through a tomato half the time but at least my fingers stay attached.

Wait hold on his PALM? Like the whole flat part of his hand? Oh my god that's somehow worse than a fingertip because you can't even bandage that right. I bet the cabbage turned pink before he even realized what happened. Those Benriners are no joke my cousin's line cook lost a knuckle bad enough he had to take two weeks off. I'm with you on the cheap plastic ones though I got a little hand guard with mine and still flinch every time I use it.
