Spent $80 on a fancy mandoline and almost lost a fingertip

I bought one of those expensive stainless steel mandolines with the super sharp blades last month. Figured it would save me time on prep, you know, for uniform veg cuts. But the guard slipped on my third onion and I sliced right into my thumb, bad enough to need three stitches at urgent care. I swear I was being careful too, has anyone else had a scary close call with a slicer like that?

Wait, did you try using it without the guard at all? I mean, I get why guards exist but sometimes they just get in the way more than they help. I had a similar thing happen with a cheap box grater once, took the skin off my knuckle and now I just hold the vegetable differently. Maybe it's just me but I feel like the more expensive tools just give you a false sense of safety.

Three stitches is nothing, wait until you hit bone or need surgery. I've been using a cheap plastic mandoline for years and never even nicked myself cause you just gotta pay attention with your fingertips curled under. People get too relaxed with the safety guard and then act surprised when sharp metal wins.
