Yeah flaxseed oil is honestly kind of a scam for cast iron. The drying oils like that just don't bond right with the pan, they always end up chipping off on you. You're better off just using Crisco or vegetable oil, it's way more forgiving and doesn't get all flaky like that.

Gotta disagree with you @the_harper, my flaxseed seasoning has held up great for years.

And it's like this whole internet culture thing where someone finds one trick that works for them and suddenly it's THE definitive method for everything, you know? Same thing happened with that baking soda and vinegar cleaning craze, people were using it on granite countertops and ruining the seal because it's actually acidic. Or how everyone went crazy for those raw food diets for their dogs and then vets started seeing all these nutritional deficiencies. It's like we forgot that the old way of doing things was actually fine for a reason, not because people were stupid but because it just worked. So now you're stuck scraping off flaxseed goo when you could have just been using crisco like your grandma did and had zero problems. What would it take for more people to realize that trendy doesn't always mean better?
