Wasted $200 on a fancy knife sharpener that ruined two of my blades
Bought one of those electric pull-through sharpeners from a kitchen supply store last spring. Thought it would save me time. After three passes on my chef's knife and a Santoku, both had uneven edges and scratches. Took them to a pro who said those things shave off way too much metal. Had to get both blades re-profiled for $50 each. Stick with whetstones now, cheaper and actually works. Anyone else get burned by a gadget like that?

Yeah, you tried those pull-through ones too? Total scams.

Total scams" - yeah man, you nailed it. I fell for one of those cheap pull-through things at a home show and basically turned my favorite chef's knife into a butter knife with scratches. Felt like a real genius when I tried to sharpen my good Santoku and ended up with a wavy edge that looked like a bread knife. Had to pay a guy $40 to fix it, which hurt worse than the knife itself. At least now I just use a simple stone and my own clumsy hands, which is way cheaper even if I nick myself every third time.

and thats EXACTLY what happened with my dad's old cleaver after i used one of those electric sharpeners on it. he was SO mad, still brings it up every thanksgiving. @william_garcia yeah man those pull-through ones are trash, i learned the hard way too. i actually picked up a cheap ceramic rod at a garage sale and it works way better for quick touch ups, just gotta be careful not to dig in too deep.
