Metal flue pipes are everywhere now, and it feels weird
I was cleaning one of those shiny metal systems yesterday and it got me thinking. Back in my early days, most chimneys were brick and you had to know the angles. Now, new houses all have these prefab pipes that take half the time. It's not bad, just different, and I sort of miss the puzzle of a masonry stack. My uncle used to say a good sweep could tell the age of a house by the soot. These days, the soot is lighter and the work is quicker, but it lacks that touch. Anyway, just reminiscing about how the job has changed over the years.

Yeah, the part about lighter soot got me. Even the dirt is less interesting now. I guess modern soot is just as generic as the pipes, no personality at all. At least you don't have to work as hard to get it off your clothes.

You ever notice how the new soot feels different too? It used to leave a gritty, almost sticky film that told a story, now it's just a fine gray powder that blows right off. Kinda sad when even the grime loses its texture.

Remember scrubbing that old soot out of a wool coat? That was a whole workout, and it still left a shadow. I'll take the new powder any day. It means the air is cleaner now, and my lungs don't feel heavy after a long shift. Sometimes boring is better when it comes to breathing.

These new shiny pipes are so plain they make me question my career choices. At least the old soot had some character, unlike my Saturday night plans.
