Shoutout to the time my ladder slipped on wet leaves and I almost fell off a roof. Scared me straight.

Yeah, "scared me straight" is exactly it. I always brushed off warnings about wet leaves or dew being slippery. Then one morning my boot just skidded off a damp shingle like it was ice. Man, that moment of pure panic before I caught myself properly shook me. I don't ignore that stuff anymore.

My buddy Mark was cleaning his gutters last fall and his ladder was set on a patch of wet grass. The feet just kicked out from under him without any warning at all. He was left hanging onto the gutter for dear life, his feet dangling in the air. He managed to swing himself onto the porch roof but he was white as a sheet. He told me he replayed that feeling of the ladder going loose over and over for weeks. Now he checks the ground and uses standoffs every single time, no exceptions.

When you mentioned that feeling of the ladder going loose, it made me think about how much that messes with your head afterwards. It's not just about falling; it's the constant worry that can make you second-guess every step you take on a ladder now. That's WHY I always double-check my setup, even if it seems overkill, because once that trust is broken, it's hard to get back.
