Spent 4 hours on a flue liner install that should have taken 90 minutes because the crown was cracked worse than I thought

Had to stop mid-job in Evanston last Tuesday to chip out old mortar and repoint half the crown before I could even drop the liner, and by the time I finished I was chasing shadows with a headlamp - anyone else ever get blindsided by a hidden crown crack that ate up your whole afternoon?

Did you check the crown from the ground first or just assume it was solid? I always poke around the crown with a screwdriver before starting now, learned that lesson the hard way in Oak Park. Three hours of unexpected repointing on a 100-year-old house, same as you.

Checking the crown first is wasted time when you could be making money.
