Stuck with a clogged flue on a cold job last week and tried something I usually skip
I was out in the middle of a job near Boulder last Tuesday and the flue was totally jammed with creosote chunks. My usual trick with the rotary brush wasn't cutting it and I was about to drive 45 minutes back for a chemical treatment. But the homeowner had some of that creosote remover powder sitting in his garage and talked me into trying it. I've always been skeptical of those powders, figured they were a gimmick for rookies. I mixed it up per the instructions and let it sit for 20 minutes before scrubbing again. That stuff actually broke up the thickest layer I couldn't budge before. Has anyone else had a surprise success with a product they normally avoid?

Hang on, you let that powder sit for 20 minutes? Did you actually let it soak into the glaze or did you scrub it right after the dwell time? I've had guys tell me those powders need a full hour to really work on heavy buildup, not just a quick soak. Also, was it the kind you mix with water or the one that's just a dry sprinkle? I'm curious if the brand mattered or if it was just plain old patience that did the trick.
