The 12-inch brush I bought at a farm auction in Ohio refused to fit any flue I threw it at

Took it on 4 jobs this week and every single liner was either 10 inches or 14, so I finally measured the bristle pattern and it's not even round, it's slightly oval. Anyone else ever buy a weird old brush on a whim and just keep it in the truck out of spite?

That brush sounds like it earned its keep in your truck just by being a problem. Honestly, I respect the spite factor. Some tools just refuse to be useful and at some point you're not carrying it for work anymore, you're carrying it to prove a point. My money's on it being handmade, those oval ones pop up now and then and they're always a pain. At least you know it's not you messing up the measurements. Take your time before you scrap it, sometimes the weird ones end up being perfect for some oddball job later.
