The 16-2-1 rule I found in a 1920s sweep manual changed how I clean liners
I bought this old book at an estate sale for 5 bucks. It had a rule that says for every 16 inches of flue, you need 2 inches of brush overlap and 1 full rotation. I tried it on a tough creosote job yesterday and it cut my time by half. Anyone else run into old trade secrets like this that still work today?

That "one full rotation" thing sounds like a superstition from a hundred years ago. Overlapping the brush is smart, but tying it to exact flue inches is just making up math to sound scientific.

Honestly @the_claire has a point. I mean sure it worked once but that doesn't mean it's a magic formula. Probably just good technique dressed up in old timey math.
