The cheap wire brush I swore by for 10 years was ruining my flues

Honestly, I used the same stiff steel wire brush for over a decade on every chimney in the Portland area. Last winter a homeowner asked why their liner had these deep scratches after my sweep, and I just said it was normal wear. Tbh, I never thought twice about it. Then a buddy of mine who does this in Salem showed me his poly brush and pointed out how my steel bristles were gouging the clay tiles. Ngl, I felt like an idiot for ignoring the obvious marks I'd been seeing for years. That one conversation cost me nothing but saved dozens of my customers from premature liner damage. Has anyone else stuck with an old tool out of habit and only realized the damage after a client called it out?

Screaming at how many of us just accept "normal wear" on gear until someone else points out we're the problem. It's wild how a $40 poly brush fix can save customers thousands in repairs and keep your own rep intact.
