TIL a $9 drain auger told me more about a flue than my rods did
Last week I was on a 1920s bungalow in Dubuque with a masonry flue that kept puffing smoke back into the living room. Rods and a standard brush came back clean, so I almost wrote it off as a draft problem until I ran a cheap 25 foot drain auger up from the cleanout. It snagged at about 11 feet and pulled out a wad of old bird nest and twigs the brush had just been gliding over. Lesson for me is that bristles ride past soft blockages instead of grabbing them, and an auger grabs almost anything. Anyone else keep a plumbing tool in the chimney bag, and what do you use to pull soft nests without scratching a liner?
