Tried a new brush head last Tuesday and got double the soot I expected

Honestly, I've been using the same poly brush for like 3 years now, figured it was fine. Last Tuesday I swapped to a different brand my buddy in Portland recommended, one with those twisted wire bristles instead of the flat ones. First job I used it on was a regular residential flue, nothing crazy, but the amount of creosote that came down was insane. I'm talking nearly double what I normally pull out of a chimney that size. Made me realize my old brush was probably just sliding over a lot of the buildup instead of actually scraping it off. Learned that a worn out brush can waste your time and leave a mess for the homeowner later. Has anyone else had a similar experience switching brush types and seeing that big a difference?

Did you catch that video from the CSIA a few months back about brush wear rates? It really opened my eyes to how fast those flat bristles can go dull without you even noticing. Sounds like that twisted wire brush is actually cutting into the creosote where your old one was just polishing it, lol.

My buddy Dave used a dull brush for a whole season and ended up with a chimney fire that nearly took his roof off.

@angela_harris probably learned that the hard way, my old brush left a waxy coating that took more work to scrape off later.
