Warning: I overheard a homeowner in Boise say 'a clean chimney is just for looks' and it made me want to bang my head on a brick wall.
I mean, that mindset is why I see so many Level 2 creosote deposits and cracked flue tiles from ignored inspections, so what's the most frustrating misconception you've had to correct lately?

Exactly, it's literally a life or death system.

Read a firefighter saying yearly cleanings catch little cracks before CO gets loose, @phoenixw11.

That "just for looks" idea is why people forget it's about stopping carbon monoxide from coming back in.

Look, modern heating is just way better and safer than it used to be. A lot of those old warnings are for houses with ancient furnaces. If you have a newer, high-efficiency unit, the risk is basically zero. People spend money on pointless cleanings every year when that cash could go to actual home improvements, like better insulation. The whole chimney sweep thing feels like an outdated scare tactic to keep a dying trade alive.
