Warning: I used the wrong brush size for 3 years until a customer pointed it out
I was cleaning a 1930s chimney in St. Louis last week and the homeowner asked why I was using a 6-inch brush on an 8-inch flue. Has anyone else had a simple mistake like that totally change their whole approach?

That putty knife story hits close to home. I had been using the wrong brush for years and nobody said a word until that one customer.

My dad used a putty knife to open paint cans for like 10 years. Then he saw me using the actual tool for it. Called me a liar. Had to show him the internet. You probably gave that customer a good story though. At least you were cleaning the chimney right? Just with the wrong size.

Used to think brush size was mostly about your own comfort and speed. But yeah, after seeing the difference on that flue, I totally get why it matters for a proper clean.
