Wasted $150 on a cheap creosote log - don't fall for it

I spent $35 on those creosote treatment logs at Home Depot thinking they'd save me time between cleanings. Three months later I pulled 2 inches of crusted buildup out of a flue that should have been fine. Had to go back with a rotary brush kit that cost me $150 to fix the mess. Has anyone else had these logs actually cause more problems than they helped?

Did you maybe have a pre-existing issue before using the log? I've used those things for years with no problems, just gotta make sure the chimney is clean to start with.

Wait, aren't you supposed to check for blockages before burning anything anyway?

Tbh, most people don't bother checking for blockages before lighting up. They just toss the log in and hope for the best. But yeah, if you've got a dirty chimney or a bird nest up there, that log is gonna make things way worse. That's probably what happened to OP.
