Dropped $600 on a chrome plating kit from Eastwood and my bumper looks worse than when I started
I bought the kit last spring thinking I could save money on the front bumper of my 68 Camaro instead of sending it out to a shop in Dayton that quoted me $850. After 3 weekends of polishing, degreasing, and spraying in my garage, the finish came out cloudy and started peeling near the bracket holes within a month. Has anyone actually gotten a decent home plating result, or am I better off just eating the cost and letting a pro handle it?
From what I've read, those home chrome kits are mostly zinc plating with a chrome-look top coat, not real chrome. Real chrome plating needs a copper and nickel base and a tank with serious chemicals and current control, which is why shops charge what they do. The cloudy finish is usually from spraying too far away or in the cold, and the peeling at the bracket holes happens because you can't get good coverage in tight spots. Save your money for the shop in Dayton, $850 is honestly a fair price for a bumper that'll actually last.
