I quit sanding bare metal down to 400 grit before primer, and I want more people to push back on me
Everyone on the forums insists you take bare metal to 220 and then epoxy prime, but I started finishing steel to 80 grit on purpose last spring after reading the tech sheets from SPI and it sticks better than anything I ever did before. I sprayed the doors on my 1979 Chevy C10 in my brother's garage in Fresno and the orange peel went away once I stopped polishing the metal like furniture. A painter named Ray at the local supply shop backed me up and said the epoxy needs something to bite into, not a mirror. Am I the only one who thinks the old grit chart advice is backwards?
